Whether you’re into soul, or hip hop, the surest way to establishing a name for yourself in the music industry remains the same: you should make your beats while still maintaining your own brand of music.

Understandably, the thought of making your own beats can be rather daunting. However, you should do your best to take this as a challenge rather than letting it dishearten you from chasing your dreams.

Make Your Own Beats Count…Start by Mastering Your Genre

Of course, don’t take this advice to the extreme and challenge yourself into developing a totally new genre. While that’s definitely attainable, you might have to develop your repertoire a bit first. Meanwhile, there’s nothing wrong with devoting your time to polishing your skills and broadening your understanding of your chosen genre. Explore the works of your peers and see if they can inspire you into making your own beats better than ever.

By devoting your time to be proficient in your genre, you have already placed yourself a step ahead of equally debuting musicians and enhancing your potential as a music artist.

One nice thing about today’s music business is the increased accessibility to equipment. These days, it’s not necessary for you to purchase expensive technology for creating your own beats.

Producing the ideal beat for your music requires three important components: midi drums, audio loops, and bass line. These components appy to any kind of music so it’s important for you to understand how they function and what they can add to your music.

A song’s bass line is its underlying frame. It is composed of a set of notes or beats that will be played from start to finish and which all other elements of your song would have to work with in order to maintain an audible sense of harmony.

You can devote as much time as you want improving your bass line. If your bass line doesn’t work, then the rest of the song won’t function either.

The second factor you have to consider is the audio loop. This is a common favorite among rap & hip hop creators. They are commonly used for altering your music’s primary theme or mood. To create one, you simply mix a set of notes from musical instruments or any other viable source of sound. You can play and experiment however you want until you get the best set of beats.

And last but definitely not the least, make sure you create midi drum patterns which go well with the rest of the piece. You can choose to apply one set or pattern of notes or mix various sets. Anything goes as long as it enhances rather than detracts from your work.

At times, midi drum patterns are not patterns at all. But instead, they are made up of a diverse set of beats and played as repeating loops and acting as something related to a secondary tier of music tune or beat.

To summarize: in making your beats, always start with building a compelling bass line to stand as your music’s foundation then solidifying it with equally well-developed audio loops and one or several midi drum patterns.

If you’re ready to make your beats then don’t let anything stop you from creating beautiful music for the entire world to hear.
